Hannibal - Caribou - Swim (Merge, 2010)
This probably wouldn’t be anyone’s immediate pick for the stand-out track of this album. Up until the last two minutes or so it’s just a weird instrumental. But after listening to this (amazing) album a few times, this quite possibly is my favourite track on there. Gradually building from the dreamy distorted synths at the beginning, it takes you on a slightly melancholy, almost hypnotic journey through one of Caribou’s most intriguing soundscapes. Then, after you think that’s how the track will end, it subtly changes, and brings in his dreamy vocals.
If you haven’t got this album yet, I strongly recommend it. This is definitely on the shortlist for album of the year, and just about every track is a stand-out in some way (my other favourites being Sun, Kaili and Leave House). But make sure you listen out for this track, Hannibal.
