Buckle Up - Dirty Projectors – Buckle Up 7” (2012, Domino)
Dave Longstreth, the mastermind behind Dirty Projectors, appears to be a hard man to predict. With each new release, his music has been growing more polished and accessible. This shift has brought with it increasing hype and a growing fan base, but Longstreth’s music has not lost the complexity and quirkiness that made it unique and engaging.
Considering this trend, Dirty Projectors’ new A-Side is completely out of left field. Buckle Up thrashes along for less than two minutes before seemingly imploding from sheer enthusiasm. The track still captures the melodic feel of Dirty Projectors’ latest album, Swing Lo Magellan, but without the refined nature of tracks like About to Die. The verses of Buckle Up are shrouded in fuzz and cymbals, while in the choruses Dave Longstreth’s voice fights to be the center of attention over manic guitar screeches and the unceasing, restless drumming.
It’s not the release that we expected, but the Dirty Projectors have always been willing to shake things up. The 7” that Buckle Up appears on is a tour only exclusive, requiring a password from the band’s twitter. Regardless of what you make of the A-Side, you have to be curious about what the band does on the B-Side.
