Libra - James Blake - upcoming EP (2011, R&S)

It’s been a massive year for good ol’ J Blizzy. First up was his self-titled debut LP, released to widespread acclaim, but also generating some more polarized opinions, especially in regards to its stylistic step away from the heavy dubstep influence apparent in his earlier EPs. But a couple of months later he dropped Order and Pan on Hemlock, a sharp turn back towards dubstep, albeit with some very minimalist, stripped back production. Then, just earlier this month, he released his Enough Thunder EP on Atlas, his most polarizing release yet, and definitely the least dubsteppy (at least on the surface).

But obviously that wasn’t enough, Blake is now set to hit a label trifecta this year— R&S just announced that a new James Blake EP is due out through them by December. Haters and general ‘meh’sayers of his Enough Thunder can rejoice, as this likely indicates that this release will be be infused with a lot more dubstep, along the lines of his earlier EP releases on R&S, CMYK and Klavierwerke. Fall Creek Boys Choir - James Blake & Bon Iver - Fall Creek Boys Choir (2011)

After he alluded to a collaboration earlier this week, James Blake helped premiere his collab-via-email with Bon Iver (or more specifically, Justin Vernon) on BBC1 last night. Officially released next week, Fall Creek Boys Choir is a spacious production; with James Blake providing his trademark watery keyboards and post-dubstep crackles and pops (with dog bark), while Vernon’s multi-layered vocals float and soar above.

According to James Blake, Fall Creek Boys Choir is just one of many that the pair have worked on, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see if any more get released. Also, underneath the official YouTube recording, Blake posted “Enough Thunder - Oct 2011”, of which one would only assume to mean his next release is titled Enough Thunder and is coming out this October. Pan - James Blake - Order / Pan (2011, Hemlock)

James Blake’s self-titled debut is doubtless one of 2011’s most critically acclaimed albums, and is almost undoubtedly my favourite of the year so far.

He’s just announced the release of a new single on his old label Hemlock, but even if you are familiar with the stylistic fluctuations apparent in his older releases, it still may come as a bit of a shock. Order and Pan are dark, stripped-back productions, exhibiting none of the watery, layered vocals that populated his earlier works. Blake’s post-dubstep UK bass influences become much more pronounced, with the twitchy percussion lines and sub-bass wobbles coming to the fore of the music. But even though they may be very different to the music on his sublime LP, these tracks are by no means of any lower quality, and if anything they demonstrate great flexibility from Blake as an artist.
