Nova - Burial + Four Tet - TEXT013 (2012, Text)

Following on from their classic first collaboration Moth / Wolf Cub, and last year’s fantastic Ego / Mirror (which of course featured Thom Yorke on vocals), old school chums Burial and Four Tet are soon releasing a new work on Four Tet’s label Text.

Four Tet uploaded Nova to his SoundCloud just hours ago, and although it’s not pushing any serious new ground, why fix what isn’t broken? In many ways it’s the duo’s finest collaboration yet, featuring Burial’s trademark warped vocals and twitchy percussion lines, supported by some welcome timbral warmth and haunting melodic lines courtesy of Four Tet.

Hold On (Sisi BakBak Remix) - SBTRKT - Hold On (2012, XL)

In the latest pseudonym dilemma to hit the internet, Pitchfork have connected a number of dots to suggest that the previously unheard of producer Sisi BakBak is in fact Thom Yorke.

The Sisi BakBak remix of SBTRKT’s upcoming single Hold On recently debuted on KEXP 90.3 FM during Cheryl Waters’ “The Mid Day Show”, with Waters indicating that the producer would be playing in Key Arena soon— the same venue Radiohead are booked to play at in April. 

Alright, that’s strenuous link so far, but there’s more. A few hours later BBC’s Rob Da Bank tweeted “listening to the thom yorke mix of @SBTRKT for the 18th time…unbeatable!”. And given the fact that SBTRKT provided a remix for Radiohead’s latest LP release TKOL RMX 1234567 (which was also released on XL recordings), a remix in return by Thom Yorke is more than likely.

Make of it what you will, but assuming we’re talking about the same track, Rob Da Bank knows what he’s talking about, I’ve had this remix on repeat for hours too. It’s a dark, surging, dancefloor-ready production that really would sound right at home in a Thom Yorke DJ set.

Airport Bass Mix 26/12/2011

My first proper return to the decks after a hectic few months with Uni and work. As such, I’m a little rusty on the mixing in places, but the songs are all awesome so it’s okay.

I think as a mix it features heavily three artists I’ve been really into this year: Jamie xx, Thom Yorke and Disclosure; but it’s really just meant to cover a range of ‘bass’/’post-dubstep’/garage music or whatever you want to call it, from the housey bass at the start, to a much more dubstep influenced finish.

Bloom (Jamie xx RMX) - Radiohead - TKOL RMX 1234567 (2011)

Thom Yorke’s been a busy chap of late. First off, he delivered the marvellous mix below for Mary Anne Hobbs a few days ago. It’s full of deliciously dark electronica, and even includes a snippet of an unreleased solo track of his, The Twist.

More recently, he joined Gilles Peterson on BBC1 for a couple of hours. As well as dropping Jamie xx’s highly-anticipated remix of Radiohead’s Bloom, he also let slip a couple of interesting pieces of info. First up, he confirmed a Radiohead tour in 2012 (fingers crossed for their rumoured Big Day Out slot), as well as letting us know that he’d almost finished a record with his side-project Atoms for Peace (along with Flea from The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and long-time Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich).

So I guess we’ll see how that all pans out sometime soon, but in the meantime check out the rip of Jamie xx’s Bloom remix, which will of course appear in full on the upcoming TKOL RMX 1234567.

“Thanks to the leaky ship that is the internet” you can currently check out the two tracks that feature Thom Yorke on Modeselektor’s upcoming album. Be quick, there’s no telling how long they’ll stay up for, and they are accompanied by lovely promo CD bleepy watermarks, but nonetheless they still sound awesome. They’re making it just that bit harder to wait for Monkeytown. But in the meantime, be sure to check out Modeselektor’s recently released remix of Radiohead’s Morning Mr Magpie, (or Good Evening Mrs Magpie once the German duo finished with it).

Radiohead have released yet another installment in their TKOL RMX 12-inch series, with the fifth release featuring remixes from Brokenchord, Blawan, and what would seem to be an album mashup of sorts by Altrice. Check it out:

Girl at a Party with Siren (Dub Version) - The Dove - Girl at a Party with Siren (2011, Twin Turbo)

So Tiga has finally decided to release the record, um, you know the one, it’s got that huge buildup… the crazy track that he’s been playing out for like three years. I know I’ve been trying to get my mitts on it ever since hearing it on his last Essential Mix back in ‘09. It really is that good.

But the thing is, it’ll be the first release on a brand new sublabel of his highly regarded Turbo Recordings, a digital-only offshoot aptly named Twin Turbo. I’ll leave you with the official words from the man himself:

And why isn’t there a better way to kick things off than with the latest bomb from longtime collaborators Jesper Dahlback and Tiga? This release marks the latter’s first single as The Dove, which is less an alias than a persona he adopts after his third morning bowl of cereal, when he goes and wanders around the neighborhood in search of someone to inspire.

“Girl at a Party With Siren” is the perfect soundtrack to being at a party with a girl, and hearing a siren. This is not up for discussion. “It was important to me to work with voices other than my own,” he says of the track’s prominent vocal samples of a girl talking and – on the Preacherman Version - a male preacher impersonation. “You can file this under “Clergy Impersonation-Related Techno”. Get on it, Filemaster.”
